Types of Pianos

There are 3 primary types of pianos. These are upright, grand and electronic. Upright and grand are types of acoustic pianos, whereas an electronic/digital piano has different working principles.

So they can be grouped like this to show the working principles:

  • Acoustic Pianos
    • Upright
    • Grand
  • Digital Pianos

Acoustic pianos produce sound with hammers and steel strings. When a key is pressed, the hammers move and hit the strings and make sounds; and if fingers are released from the keys, they turn back to their positions. Thus, there instruments sound more natural from their counterparts.

Diversely, digital pianos produce sound by playing audio recordings that were previously taken from acoustic pianos, using high quality speakers.

Upright Piano

It has its strings run vertically, causing it to take less space and fit better than a grand piano in houses and apartments. But it also offers similar authentic musical experience.

Grand Piano

A grand piano has its strings extended along horizontally. It's strings are longer than the upright piano. This provides better, richer tone and reduces the probability of harmony distruption among tones. These are mostly used in concerts due to their costliness.

Digital Piano

It doesn't have the built-in mechanical system that grand and upright pianos own, so it weights and costs less. These also come with a headphone connection choice. It could be played independently of time, keeping peace between neighbors and family members.
